Mikey's Cafe and Bakery Co.

Hello! I've been a little MIA this week. I did a quick road trip with the bestie earlier this week and then been busy at work. Needless to say, I was in need of a weekend!

Today we tried out a new place to eat, Mikey's Cafe and Bakery. The Mr. found this little place (I have no idea how) and wanted to give it a try. I must at admit, I was a little hesitant because it's a location that well... how shall we don't want to be after dark. We agreed to do lunch there. Day light.

Desserts galore. They also do cakes for events there.

Boy was I happy to see Cheerwine in their drink selection. It was my splurge.

Turkey and Swiss on Crossiant. Kettle chips.

The egg nog pie. No kidding. Straight up egg nog. I had a bite or two and seriously, there is no way I could finish that on my own. It was delicious but just too rich.

Read | Unbroken

Guys. This book. Wow. When I would  start reading, I struggled to put it down. It caused all kinds of emotions.

It follows the life of Louis Zamperini from childhood to an adult. As a child he was a little "problem child" and his family were able to shift his focus on running to keep him out of trouble. He been participating in track and breaking records which later led him to the Olympics.

Around that time, the World War 2 was going on and he enlisted in the Air Force. He was a bombardier. During a search for missing soldiers, the unfortunate happened, their plane was shot down over the Pacific Ocean during an air fight with Japanese fighters. Three survived that ordeal and floated on a raft for weeks. That alone could drive any one to insanity.

As if that wasn't enough, when they finally begin to see land, they are captured by Japanese. This is where things begin to get serious in the story. The treatment of the POW's during this war in POW camps was just heartbreaking. The living conditions, lack of food and clean drinking water, the abuse... There were so many times I literally just cringed as I read the words. I would just read thinking "when is this all going to end?". Well, it does at some point, right? War officially is over. The POWs that survived go back home. But the torture continues in their dreams. The statistics about this were startling.

Oh, and might I add that the majority of these guys were in their early 20s?? There are photos throughout the book and seriously, babies!

Reading this book and the horrendous stories of all the hardships that POW's had to endure is so humbling. You take for granted the freedom we have and those who sacrifice their lives for us. It's no stroll in the park, folks.

I couldn't recommend this book enough. Amazing job. So much so, that the movie came out during this past holiday season. May still be out. I plan on watching it and seeing their interpretation of the book. I already know that it's not as good as the book because there are just so many details that can't be captured in some two hours. Still heard it was good overall.

Here is a little clip...

After reading this, I'm on the search for a more light-hearted easy read. Any recommendations??

Home | Master Bedroom Inspiration Board

One of my goals for this year is to finish furnishing/decorating our home. I am trying to do this room by room, starting with the master bedroom.

My vision for this room is a rustic chic theme. Wood. Burlap. Whites/Neutrals. We have wood furniture that will stay. The bed is a canopy with iron details. I think will go perfectly with the rustic chic.

Below is what I have in mind for the room.

So far, I have the following:
Walls are painted. Oatbran from Valspar.
Bed comforter set from BB&B.
A white wash mirror (similar that I found at Homegoods).
Two rectangle mirrors (similar that I found at Homegoods). I want to put one above each nightstand.
Mr. & Mrs. Pillow.

Still need:
Lamps for the nighstand. We have some already, so no rush. But would like to switch out soon.
Vase from Pottery Barn. I want to add some fake florals in it.
Window Picture Collage Frame. I actually plan on using this with no pictures. I like the look of the window and want to do an arrangement using the mirror, frame and vase on our armoire.
White curtains.

Here are some rooms that I have pinned for inspiration.

Meal Plan | Week 7

Hello friends. I'm back with another meal plan for this week.

When I was picking out meals, the Mr. asked for something Asian so that we could use the bag of edamame we've had in our freezer for some time now. He asks, and I give. I found a couple Asian recipes on Skinnytaste (I really like that website). We made the rice tonight and it looks legit. Can't wait to have it tomorrow.

The Creamy Corn Soup is also from Skinnytaste. We made this a while back and it is so good! We use some of the queso fresco and corn tortillas to make quesadillas.

Here are pictures of three of the four meals we had last week. I forgot to take a picture of the tilapia dish. #hungrygirlproblems

The chicken kabobs are delicious. I marinated them the night before so the chicken had a good amount of time to soak in the juice. SO YUMMY. I had some of the leftovers for lunch the following day!

Friday Five | No. 2

TGIF! I couldn't be more ready for the weekend. Fortunately, my first week back after the holidays was pretty slow, so I don't have too much to complain about. However, I sure do miss being able to wake up on my own and not at the sound of an alarm!

Here are today's five

Biosilk Shine On Spray
The other day I was going through my beauty stash underneath my bathroom sink and saw I had this. Some time ago I bought this pack of Biosilk Silk Therapy and Biosilk Shine On Spray. When I long hair, I loved using the Silk Therapy on my ends. Now that I have shorter hair, I don't really like to use it because it will make my hair look greasy. When I saw the Shine On spray, I thought I would give it a try. It's perfect. Helps tame the rebellious strands of hair (thank you humidity) without making it look greasy. My hair is really soft to run through. This might sound weird, but I love the smell of Biosilk.

There are two collaborations that I am excited about. The Lilly Pulitzer/Target and Alice and Olivia/Starbucks. Last year, Alice + Olivia did a collaboration with Starbucks and they had the cutest striped tumbler with a tutu that I splurged on. I got a little crazy and bought the female bear as well because it was just adorable. I love this new tumbler!

Mark your calendars, April 19th, Lilly Pulitzer for Target is happening. Get your running shoes on and fists in air. I get the feeling there will be quite a turn out for this. Will need to get there bright and early as I know these items will be flying off the shelves quickly!

Last week I had a crafting day with a good friend of mine and we made some burlap wreaths. The wreaths proved to be a little more challenging to make than we initially expected. The tutorial we were following stated 15 minutes. Yeah times that by like 8. Took a while for us to do. Granted there was a cookie break in between. Also, by the end of the project, we worth covered in burlap fuzz. It was awesome.

I follow this account on Instagram and seriously, the doxie pup is total cuteness. I always show the Mister the videos and pictures as they post and our hearts melt. How these people manage to get these dogs in the most adorable poses is beyond me. I can barely get Addie to stay focus long enough for my phone to focus on her and snap the picture!

Special Art Project
Last week, my friend the photographer asked if I could help with a special project she was working. She was creating a book trailor for a lady and was hoping I could paint on a large paper the book cover. I jumped at the opportunity and worked on it this week. It turned out pretty good and the author of the book really liked the painting. Can't wait to see the final trailor when done.

Video | Panda's First Snow Day

A cute little video to warm your heart on this very chilly morning.

You're welcome :)

PS - The Mr. and I have decided that we need a real panda bear in our lives.

Family Photos | December 2014

Hello! Super excited about this post. At the end of last month, we took our family photos. A good friend of mine, Taylor, is a photographer and co-owns a photography/videography business, Highlight Studios. I love her work and knew I wanted to hire her to take these pictures. Boy am I glad I went with her because these photos turned out amazing!! The lighting in these photos are absolute perfection.

We originally had this session scheduled in November as we had planned on using these for Christmas cards. Unfortunately, the first scheduled date was rained out, then the second scheduled date I was sick. Finally, we were able to get them done at the end of the month.

On the day of I was running around like a maniac at the mall for something to wear as the two outfits I originally planned to wear were for cooler weather. I would have melted in a long sleeve shirt and jeans! I found this dress at Charlotte Russe and accessorized with some items I had.

We knew we wanted to have the pictures in our neighborhood because we are surrounded by some pretty scenery. Also, given that we wanted to have our dogs in the pictures, we weren't sure how it was going to go and wanted the convenience of bringing them back into the house if needed. Sure glad we thought of that! These pups were a hot mess. Addie barking up a storm (no bigger surprise). Gracie eating dirt (she never does this)! Needless to say, we got in a few shots in the beginning and took them back in the house. Good grief!

Well worth, the reschedules, last minute shopping and chaos with the pups!

Blog Updates.

We recently had family photos taken and they turned out amazing! Will post a few some time this week.

During that session my friend got a couple headshots in for my blog which I am so grateful for! I finally have a picture on the blog! This has inspired me to make some more updates around the blog that I have been wanting to do.

Some of the changes, in addition to an actual side profile picture, are:

I cleaned up my labels to be the topics of this blog. Also, I made sure they all started with a capital letter which proved to be more challenging than I thought! You will find the categories on the right. With these added, I removed the tabs up top to just home and about for now. Will add a couple more when ready.

Speaking of the about page... I updated that to include some information about yours truly. Still a work in progress but you get the point.

While updating the blog, I also updated the other social media sites I use such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook with the new profile picture. True story, I had the same profile picture on my Facebook for almost four years. I remember when I used to change that bad boy like every week! Oh how times have changed.

Live Life Beautifully journal.

So about a month ago,  when I was sick and bed ridden, I did a lot of blog reading and instagram stalking browsing. Somehow I came across Life Lived Beautifully and was so inspired by Gretchen's posts. This girl's love for Jesus is so vivid throughout her blog that it encourages me to want to love Him more!

As I was looking around her site, I came across her shop and saw the journals that she made. Then I watched her videos and thought to myself, I wanted one! I debated between the Give Me More Jesus and the Live Life Beautifully journal. Honestly, it was not an easy choice. I did consider getting both, but knowing myself, I may get overwhelmed having both. I wanted to set myself for success and not failure by getting one.

When I read the description for Live Life Beautifully, I liked that it like my new years resolution in a book. I can write in it during my quiet time and reflect.

The new "Live Life Beautifully" journal for 2015 was created to encourage women to live their lives intentionally for the glory of God. Instead of simply making a new years resolution, we should make commitments to follow Jesus, serve others, and share the gospel. This journal has been intentionally designed to help you craft your mission statement, dream big, and plan ways to serve Jesus and remember what He has done throughout the year.

First of all, can we talk about how pretty the cover is??? I'm a sucker for cute girly stuff. It makes me smile. This journal is so me!

There is a letter from her to the reader about the book. Also pages with quotes and bible verses.

Then there is a section with a whole bunch of questions for you to answer. Where you came from, your role model, gifts, talents, passions, I started filling in some of the pages. Gotta tell ya. Some of them weren't easy to answer. Some of them even made me a little emotional. It's clearly working!

Where I really got stuck was the Mission Statement. Basically, you create your mission statement you wish to live by. Still working on that.

Then she gives you an area to make lists... things you want to do, read, adventures and scriptures to memorize. This section spoke to this little Type A personality's heart. No surprise, I had quite the reading list. And I've already added a couple more to that list!

Here an example of what a week looks like.

I think what I appreciate about this journal is that it captures all areas of your life. Not just spiritual, but personal goals. I love what this book has already started in me and look forward to this year.

Currently | January 2015

A typical January morning in Florida...

The view in the back of our home.

LISTENING | Carrie Underwood's Greatest Hits album. I lost some of the CDs I had of her's during some moves I made and was so bummed. Happy to see that most of my faves from those CDs are on the greatest hits. Loving the two new songs for the album "Something in the water" and "Little Toy Guns".  And yes, I bought the actual CD. Call me old school but there are some albums I like to purchase in CDs. This is one of them.

READING | Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. I started reading this book as it was highly recommended to me. I'm ten chapters in and enjoying it so far. It is the story of Louis Zamperini, who went from being an Olympic athlete to an airman in WWII. This book is full of old pictures and illustrations from WWII. It's funny, when I was younger I couldn't care less about history, but now I appreciate it. I love reading biographies, watching the History channel and looking at old pictures. It's heartbreaking to read about how many young men were killed, not only during the actual fight, but during trainings! The planes they used then were much heavier and not as durable as they are now for war. Brings to life what these men and women that fight for country endure. True heros.

WATCHING |  The Twilight Saga weekend on FX. I love this movie. #sorrynotsorry It never fails, if it's on, you can bet my tush is glued to the couch. Yes, I own all movies and can watch it whenever I want. Still get sucked in (no pun intended) when it's on TV. Also, when ever I watch this movie, I want to go to Oregon and Washington. It's on my travel bucket list to visit one day.

WANTING |  I have been wanting this Elle Est Forte tee by She Is clothing. Based off of the Proverbs 31:25 Bible verse, "She is clothed with strength and dignity; She can laugh at the days to come". Love that verse. Plus, I'm really digging the simple tee with statement necklace look. This is perfect.

EATING | White Chocolate Cranberry Oatmeal cookies with walnuts. Found this recipe on Pinterest and the Mr. baked them the other day. Oh my word, seriously, so good. And because they are oatmeal cookies, I tell myself they are healthier to eat.

DRINKING | Chai tea. I've been enjoying a cup in the evenings while reading a book or watching some TV. Perfect way to wind down and relax before bed.

DOING | I've been working on re-decorating our Master Bedroom. I have found some gems at my fave stores like Homegoods and TJ Maxx. This weekend we are painting over the brown accent wall we have in there. When I first moved in, I was all about accent walls. Slowly, I have been painting over them opting for a neutral color. Can't wait for it to be done!

Friday Five | Edition No. 1

Usually, I am excited for Fridays, except for today. This means I only have two days left before I go back to work. #boo

This week off has been just what I needed. I did some major cleaning and purging of things. I had a lot of stuff that I have been holding on to that I really never used and were taking up space. It's like the beginnings of a hoarder. I REFUSE to let that happen. So Goodwill made a killing with me this week.

I've also had a lot of time to brainstorm and focus a little more on The Current Confidential. I really do enjoy blogging. Writing and site layout/design. Seriously makes me think that my English teacher in high school saw something I didn't see when she recommended I go on a field trip to the Tampa Tribune offices...

Something I would like to begin doing on the blog are Friday Fives. Can't promise I will always be consistent but I will do my best. Basically talk about five things that are on my mind. Range from anything to something I did that week, current events, books, makeup, fashion, home, etc. Skies the limit. Lots of bloggers do this, so I'm no genius on this idea. Hope to introduce you readers to new things!

Here goes my Friday Five Edition 1.

Into the Woods
On Monday, I went to the theater with a friend to watch this movie. I really enjoyed the movie. It was basically all musical, which for a musical lover like me, I loved! Anna Kendrick is quickly making her way on my girl crush list. She did such a great job. I was surprised with some other actors/actresses with their hidden singing talents. Who knew Emily Blunt and Chris Pine can hold a tune? My only ehh about it was that I think it felt a little long. I would say about three quarters in I was like, okay when is it ending?

Female Entrepreneur Association
I happened to come across this site from a pin on Pinterest. According to their site, it is "an online hub with the mission of inspiring and empowering women from around the world to turn their ideas into a reality, build successful businesses and life a life they love". I perused the site and it is full of great resources from articles, tutorials, videos, and more. In my opinion, this is a great site for not just female entrepreneurs, but all females in the work force. I signed up for the mailing list. Can't wait to do some more digging in this site.

Kate Spade x Keds
How fun are these? Party on the feet! An IGer posted a picture of these and I was smitten. I must have these. I have some black glitter TOMS that are on its way out and have been eyeing the silver glitter ones to purchase. Mind changed, I want these babies in my closet!

Liatorp Sideboard
Yesterday, we went to Ikea to purchase this beauty. It is going in my office. Can't wait for the mister to put it together so I can start adding all my knick knacks! I have had the money saved up for some time now and finally had the chance to go make the purchase.

The Tilted Tea Cup Tea Room
We had afternoon tea on Wednesday at the Tilted Tea Cup. If you didn't already know, the husband and I love doing high tea. I believe we have been to pretty much all the tea rooms in the Tampa area and try to find spots when we are on vacations. We've been to this place before lunch and wanted to go again and try their afternoon tea. To our surprise, they actually relocated to a bigger place in the same area. We realized this when we went to their old location and it was a vet office. The new location is charming and definitely much bigger. There food was delicious! I think it has moved up to our number one fave spot. Before we left, the owner mentioned their Valentine's special... they will be having a Paris theme and horse drawn carriage rides. So, we know what we will be doing this Valentine's day.

2015 | Goals

Happy New Year!

Another year is upon us friends with another opportunity to start with a "blank page" in life. Can't necessarily erase the past but can learn from it and move forward.

Whether it's resolutions or goals, I think it's good to start the year off with a couple. Gives purpose to our lives. So I took some time to think about what I want to accomplish in this new year. Things I want to change, start, or continue. Here are my goals for 2015.

Draw closer to God.
Honestly, this is a goal that will always be on the list. I know you can never fully reach this goal. But I know I can do much better than I did last year. Even in the last couple months I've slacked in going to church. That needs to stop. I want to make my faith a priority. I also purchased the Live Life Beautifully journal to help me during my quiet time.

Be a better wife.
My husband is amazing. I'm not just saying that to say that. He really is amazing. So many times I feel that I am not a good enough wife for him. Don't get me wrong. I'm not a horrible wife. I'm loving, loyal, supportive, caring etc. But I know there are areas I need to grow in and that is what I hope to achieve this year. I would say this is an on-going goal similar to my first one. Will always learn more about him and marriage as we grow older together.

Finish decorating our town home.
I have been living in this place for four years now and the only room I can truly say is "done" is the kitchen. For a gal that loves decorating that is a shame. I think I delayed really decorating this house because I always thought I would wait until we moved into our first home. Well still here and nothing has happened. So, that will change. I want to start with our master bedroom and bathroom. Then move on to my office (aka girl cave), living room, dining room, and foyer/entry.

Start my business.
For years, I have been dreaming of starting my own business. Event Planning and Design. In 2014, I helped plan a wedding and was wedding coordinator of the day. I received such great feedback and even had people asking for my business card! If that isn't enough motivation to get me to put into work my dream, I don't know what is.

Save more. Shop less.
During this holiday break from work, I was in full on cleaning mode. I had bags and boxes full of things to take to Goodwill. It was a harsh reminder that 1) I shop too much and 2) I hold on to things for too long. I have a retail therapy problem. I shop to relieve stress. The amount of shirts that I had to donate that still had price tags was embarassing. Granted, in my defense, a lot of the donations was due to my weightless and those clothes being to big now. Still not good. Now, this doesn't mean I will completely stop shopping because that's just silly talk. But I want to be wiser in the way I spend. Buy things I truly need and will use. Not just because it's on sale or red tag (darn you Target) and is a bargain you just can't pass. Instead of careless spending, I could have saved that money towards our home fund. That will change this year.

Live well.
When I was diagnosed with my auto-immune disease in May, it gave healthy living a whole new meaning to me. I realized how my not so good eating and lack of exercise could have played into my health problems. From then on, we made it a point to really think about what we put into our bodies and to live an active lifestyle. I want to continue that into 2015. Don't stop, won't stop.

Cheers to 2015 and making things happen!
